At Gunderson High School it is very common to see students just leave during class with their teachers hall pass and not come back for at least 20 minutes. Some students will just leave without the pass, or not even go to class in the first place.

I believe students do that for the simple fact that they just don’t want to be in class or want a break from class because they don’t like the class or teacher they have.

I myself have seen students at our school ask to use the restroom just to get the pass so that they have an excuse to walk around the school, meet up with friends, or simply waste class time.

Don’t get me wrong, there are students at our school who actually do what they told their teacher they were going to do and are back in an exceptional amount of time, such as getting a book from their locker or actually using the restroom.

Mrs. Rebelo, a teacher at Gunderson, said, “My students can’t go out for the first ten or last ten minutes.” This is a school wide rule that all teachers have to follow. I believe that is also a great way in making sure students don’t even need to leave class because it lets them know that they should get the things they need done between classes, at break, or at lunch or else they are going to have to wait some time before they can do the things they need to do during class.

I believe that students are more likely to break the rules during glc and Mrs. Rebelo gave me a great reason in why that could be so.

“In glc the kids are thinking they’re not doing anything because in glc you’re not forced to learn or being taught anything,” said Mrs. Rebelo.

Some ways I believe we can fix this is each teacher keeps the students phone while they have the pass and making sure they are back in a certain amount of time, and if they exceed that time there will be consequences. Those are just some ways I believe we can stop students from leaving class and breaking the rules.
