Netflix’s original series, “On My Block,” has been a very recent craze in the lives of teens here at Gunderson High School. It’s popularity has gone up through students getting their friends into this show and recommending it because of how good it is.

“On My Block” first aired on Netflix in the year 2018. The date of the first episode was  March 16, 2018. The series so far has 1 season which has 10 episodes that range from at least 25-30 minutes long. However, it has recently been renewed for a second season. It contains a lot of a mixture of comedy, teen romance, and high school drama/reality.

“I’d say it definitely falls under a funny, realistic type series,” Isaiah Soriano said, a sophomore  who binge-watched the series in a matter of half a day.

Jovanna Chaves, another freshman, said, “The genre it falls under is drama because the show is very problematic and has a new problem every episode.”

The first season is about 4 best friends (Monse, Cesar, Ruby, and Jamal) about to enter high school. This group of teens have been friends since they were in the fourth grade so their bond is pretty tight. They live in Freeridge, Los Angeles where hearing a gun being shot doesn’t scare them because of how much it happens.

Monse was raised by a single father; Cesar is trying his hardest not to fall into his brother’s footsteps of joining a gang; Ruby is very educated; and Jamal believes in the conspiracy of RollerWorld in which there is a large amount of money hidden in their neighborhood. However, there is a romance between Monse and Cesar but remain as a secret because they don’t want to ruin the friendship among the four.

In the second episode, “Chapter Two,” another character is introduced. Olivia, who is their same age, has moved in with Ruby because her parents were deported back to Mexico. Since the minute he saw her, Ruby instantly caught feelings.

What people like the most about it is that since we are also in high school, we can relate to something that is mentioned in the show.

“I like the fact that no one really goes through exactly what happens on the show but they can somehow relate to at least one little thing or something that is happening,” Chaves said.

Another great aspect that left people wanting to continue watching was the fact that there are many unexpected things that really catch us by surprise. As mentioned by Chaves, every episode contains a new problem.

“My favorite episode out of all would be Chapter Four because in that episode there was something that definitely caught me off surprise and it puts everything that happens after into place,” Kayla Campos said.

“The cliffhanger at the ending will forsure leave you speechless and drive you to tears,” Campos said.
